The Glamorous Life of the Entrepreneur

I came across a 10 year old magazine in my home cleaning spree this week. I couldn’t believe I would keep an old magazine so I stopped & flipped through it and found this photo and article. It was February of 1998 when the comic strip character Cathy entered the world of homebased business ‘bliss’. And I can see that somethings never change, except maybe the size of her monitor. We still have ‘to do’ lists, phone calls and piles in the inbox to contend with. And we still have laundry and cleaning to fit into our schedules. Eating on the go, a big ‘no-no’ yet still an issue for so many of us. Coffee and pop, although we may have many more choices today, for many of us, we can’t work without one of them beside us on any given day.

And in the article, Cathy is fighting the vortex of constant snacking. With the refrigerator calling her all day long, and no witnesses, you can see where this is going. I, myself, learned this one long time ago. By not keeping a constant supply of junk food on hand I’ve been able to curb the urge to constantly be munching as I work.

And as I’m looking at the picture, I see Cathy’s dog (Electa) by her side trying to find contentment, I look over and see my dog Sparky curled up in his dog bed which is strategically placed in my home office where he often likes to be as I work. Right now he’s wagging his tail as I’m looking over at him so I know that I’m doing the right thing working at home. It reminds me of an old saying that goes something like ‘you can’t buy the love of a dog wagging his tail’.

And that leads me to think that you can’t buy the contentment and happiness that comes from working at home. To me, not only choosing what we do for a living, but where we do it is priceless!

The article ends with the question “What Happens Next?” If you are old enough to remember, we all know that she was able to muddle through just fine. And through her constant issues, she was able to convey the exhilaration of making enough money at home to support herself. This photo is a reminder to me and hopefully for you to hold humor in both our lives and our home based experience as an ideal to strive for. I decided I’m going to try to find ways to bring more humor into my daily work at home life.

I think it’s going to work out just fine because I think it’s funny that my teacher is a 10-year-old comic strip:-)
